Telling the parents their kid is not gifted beats MR by a mile for things I hate about my job. The concept of a 7 year old feeling like a failure because their Wechsler IQ is “only” 124 just kills me! If gifted services were actually need-based like sped is (supposed to be), instead of a prize for the “good” parents, I don’t think we’d have this problem.

OOOOOOOOO – I hate the K seats – one time I almost threw my back out testing a kid!!!!!!!

However, the worst I feel is telling a parent that their child meets the criteria for MR. I once had to do it in Spanish, and I needed to explain the concept of MR to her (as she was not even aware that children could even be born that way) and then tell her that her child was in that category. Needed a lot of whiskey after that to calm my nerves.

Thanks for the plug both here and on your blog. I found your article on stress and cholesterol to be particularly interesting given that I just got checked over the holidays and found out I was at 236. Yikes! So now I have to watch what I eat… Basically it boils down to this – if it doesn’t taste like an old shoe then I can’t have it.

Joe -

Great to see you in the blogosphere. I’ve included a post and link on my blog. My blog is primarily a resource for my students (I teach in the school psychology program at Long Island University in Brooklyn), a sort of temporary site until I get my site up and running. This coming semester, my students will be required to access and read this cogent and succint analysis of phonological processes.
